Several protester groups held a dispute in Mendiola, Manila advising President Benigno Aquino III to leave the presidency on his 55th birthday, February 8. The militant groups brought a “resignation cake” urging the Philippine president to step down from office after what happened in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last January 25. During the president’s speech, protesters blasted PNoy for not disclosing his exact role in the Mamasapano clash which left 44 elite cops dead. Meanwhile in the house of Malacañang, opposition lawmakers dismissed President Aquino’s speech as “an empty acceptance of responsibility and” “Pontius Pilate has spoken again. Ultimate responsibility rests on the President for the death of SAF 44,” Kabataan party-list Rep. Terry Ridon said. He insisted the dismissed PNP Special Action Force head Getulio Napeñas Jr., to tell the truth on the informations he had about Aquino’s responsibility in the Mamasapano incident. Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate also slammed Aquino. “The President merely absolved himself and Purisima of direct responsibility,” he said on a television interview. Both Ridon and Zarate urged the President to follow Purisima’s lead and resign, saying he was the major decision maker in the ill-fated operation. “President Aquino should not evade responsibility for the untimely and bloody demise of the “Fallen 44” and use Purisima as his fall guy,” Ridon said in a press interview. The said militants and party-list groups where looking for justice for the said tragedy of the Fallen 44 and were to blame of those who must be responsible for it. But for some Filipino, PNoy must finish his term with his best effort instead of surrendering and giving up his position. “Tapusin nalang ang termino niya. Maniwala nalang tayo sa kung ano pa ang kaya niyang gawin tutal siya naman ang nakaluklok ngayon at binoto ng taong bayan,” Paulo Teodoro, a concerned citizen. |
