In spite of the high-wall tragedy that killed 11 people in the warehouse being constructed in Barangay Ilang-ilang on 19th of January, Guiguinto Bulacan still thrived on its centennial anniversary celebration through 16th Halamanan Festival on 21 at the town proper. Themed "Sandaang Taon ng Sangang-Daang Kaunlaran," the town rejoiced throughout different activities such as the major event of the festival which is the street dancing known as "Indakan sa Kalye" that featured performers and muses from different barrios in town. The street dancing begun from Guiguinto PEO to Guiguinto Municipal Gym where the dancers from all 14 barangays namely Cutcut, Daungan, Ilang-Ilang, Malis, Panginay, Poblacion, Pritil, Pulong Gubat, Santa Cruz, Santa Rita, Tabang, Tabe, Tiaong and Tuktukan had their showdown. “ Damang dama ko ang pagiging Guiguinteno sa pamamagitan ng mga activities na ginagawa during the celebration, especially itong indakan sa kalye, isa kasi sa pinaka-inaabangan ‘to kaya naman as a participant, proud ako,” stated John Reg Martinez, from barangay Ilang-icolang. In the meantime, different departments and organizations in Guiguinto such as the Ospital ng Guiguinto, Day Care Workers, Municipal Health Office, and Knights of Columbus also joined the parade of dancers. Moreover, Halamanan Festival was initiated by Mayor Boy Cruz on January 23, 1999 since Guiguinto is known as the "Plant Garden Capital of the Philippines" and planting is the major source of livelihood of Guiguinteños. According to Guiguinto Mayor Ambrosio "Boy" Cruz Jr.," even if there’s a recent misfortune happened in the town, there are more good reasons to celebrate. "Nakakalungkot dahil mayroon pang sumapit na trahedya sa atin bago ang selebrasyon, gayonpaman naniniwala akong panggising lang ito sa atin ng Diyos. Isang mensahe ito sa atin na dapat pa tayong magpakatatag at lalong manalig sa kanya." explained Cruz.

An approximately six million people went to Pope Francis’ final mass in Quirino Grandstand, Manila on 18th of January making the attendance the largest papal gathering in history. The Pope blessed a statue of Sto. Niño in celebration of its feast and honor to the Infant Jesus, before starting the mass. He also convenes with the Kristel Padasas’ father and cousins, sending his condolences over her tragic death in Tacloban. Padasas was the lone casualty in the accident that happened after the pope’s mass in the province. Prayers of the Faithful were said in diverse languages such as Hiligaynon, Kapampangan, Ilokano, Cebuano, Binisaya and Bikolano while the Lord’s Prayer was sung in Filipino. During his homily, Pope Francis asked the Filipinos to never forget to pray for him as he prayed to Sto. Niño for the blessing of Philippines and sustaining the Christians of the nation. He called the Filipinos excellent missionaries of faith in Asia. “Kakaiba talaga ‘yong impact ng message ni Pope Francis sa mga Filipino, especially sa’kin. Nandoon kasi ‘yong sincerity niya sa mga binibitawan niyang salita at wala siyang dine-degrade na tao. Kahit malayo ako sa kanya at once ko lang siya nakita, feeling ko bless na bless ako,” explained Lucy Salvador, attendee. In chorus, the attendees sang “Tell the World of His Love” popularized by Jamie Rivera while holding up their candles. Regardless of the cold and the rain, Filipinos remained on their places as it was announced that Pope Francis would be rounding in the area to reach more people. As well, Pope Francis tolerated the bad weather, roving around Luneta with jeepney-inspired popemobile and wearing his yellow raincoat with his mark big smile. With that modest gesture, he captured the hearts of many even the non-Catholics. |
